Balenciaga and Adidas team up for a sports collaboration inspired by the 90s – Footwear News
Balenciaga and Adidas Originals have officially joined forces, continuing the sports retailer’s latest venture into high fashion – and into the Kering family of brands.
Renowned “Balenciaga / Adidas”, the collection aims to combine the archives of the two brands to reinterpret the DNA of each. According to a statement from the brand, it also draws inspiration from the late 90s and early 2000s.
Adidas shared the news on its Instagram feed after Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2023 show on Sunday afternoon.
The collection itself features a range of versatile pieces in a mostly black, red, and white color scheme with blue and gray accents, priced from $210 to $5,500. Apparel fused classic Adidas athleticism with Balenciaga’s subversive, sporty aesthetic, featuring t-shirts, hoodies, shorts, socks and track jackets featuring various logos – primarily the lettering” Balenciaga” next to Adidas’ signature three-leaf and triple-stripe design – from the duo. It also includes a mini dress, leggings, wide jeans and a puffer jacket. However, it’s only available for a limited time on Balenciaga’s website, which consumers can shop until May 29.
On the front of the shoe, the collaboration revolves around two key styles, available in men’s and women’s sizes. The first is a revamped version of Balenciaga’s iconic Triple S sneaker, available in palettes of blue and white or black, cream and gray. The mesh and foam style features its signature rounded toe, raised soles and striped rope laces. However, for an Adidas touch, it also includes three stripes on each side – a signature of the German sports giant. This pair sells for $1,100.
The second Adidas x Balenciaga shoe is another remix of a staple introduced by Demna: the Speed sock sneaker, priced at $995. With their signature chunky white sole, knit upper, and stretchy, sock-like fit, the pair still carries on the heritage of its predecessors. Adidas’ signature white three stripes, along with the brand’s and Balenciaga’s co-signed logo, gave it an extra sporty edge.
The collaboration was announced after the brand’s Spring 2023 fashion show, where it also made its runway debut. Held in the trading room of the New York Stock Exchange – the bell ringing of which marked the start of the show – the models on the catwalk stepped out in Adidas x Balenciaga pieces. They also donned the latest from Demna, which included oversized suits, pussy-bow blouses, and classic outerwear layered over latex bondage suits. The front of the shoes ranged from pointy stilettos to oversized lace-up combat boots – which Kanye West, seated front row, arrived wearing to the show. Besides Ye, the front row also included stars like Alexa Demie, Vera Wang, Chloë Sevigny, Megan Thee Stallion, and Pharrell Williams, among others.

The line’s launch also comes shortly after Adidas’ similar collaboration with Kering-owned brand Gucci – as well as the two brands’ co-signed collection last fall – which debuted during Milan Fashion Week. earlier this year. Launched in June, this collection featured similar staples adorned with Adidas logos. It’s safe to say that with these two partnerships under its belt, Adidas is on an undeniable streak in the fashion world – and everyone’s waiting to see what’s next.
