Q. My son is graduating from college this year and has about $50,000 in student loans. I never wanted him to borrow, but we didn’t have enough to pay cash. Now I inherited an IRA and want to use that money to pay off his loans. I am still working and also saving for my retirement. Do I have to pay it all at once or do I just have to cover its monthly payments?

– Dad

A. That’s an excellent question.

First, be aware that the U.S. Department of Education has extended the student loan payment pause through August 31, 2022. This means for eligible loans, a suspension of loan payments, an interest rate of 0% and no recovery on defaulted loans.

Before making a decision, consider that you will pay federal and state taxes when you withdraw from the inherited IRA, Bill Connington of Connington Wealth Management told Paramus.

“It would be important to know how much tax you will have to pay, which will reduce the amount of dollars you have to pay the debt,” he said. “Liquishing that inherited IRA can push you into the next tax bracket.”

Taxes are also an issue when you decide to pay the loans in a lump sum or with monthly payments, he said.

“If you look at it as a lump sum, you have to pay all the taxes up front and that might push you into a different tax bracket, whereas monthly payments would cover your RMD on that account and might not push you not be at a higher tax bracket.”

But the most important thing is to consider what this inherited IRA means for your retirement.

While getting rid of student debt is admirable, you won’t be able to borrow money to fund your retirement. So make sure you can afford to make those payments for your son before you do anything.

Looking for a grad gift that will go further than a check?

Key points

  • A contribution to the IRA can lay the foundation for a solid retirement plan.
  • Take the learning outside the classroom with one of our favorite personal finance books.
  • Make it personal by arranging a meeting with an expert who can provide sound, objective advice.

Graduation gifts can be many things: a sign of support, an investment in the future, and even a learning experience. This year, don’t settle for cash. Give your graduate a gift that will keep on giving for years to come. Here are three great freebies to consider.

1. Boost their IRA

Just because your graduate has earned an income doesn’t mean they can afford to put it aside for the future. Giving a contribution to an Individual Retirement Account can go a long way toward a brighter retirement. In fact, with an assumed annual growth rate of 10%, an investment of $500 today could grow to over $30,000 by the time a new graduate is ready to retire.

Want that money to go even further? Consider saving it in a Roth IRA. With a Roth IRA, retirement savings can grow tax-free, which could result in thousands of dollars in tax savings down the road. Most graduates are below the contribution phase-out threshold and may find themselves in the lowest tax bracket of their working lives.

2. Offer the gift of knowledge

While your grad is in learning mode, why not give them one last reading assignment? A personal finance book can help build strong financial habits when a graduate is about to earn a living.

Is your graduate interested in investing? Check out these 6 great books for investors

Most personal finance books cover the basic concepts of financial well-being, from income to expense, and from saving to investing. However, some books are more suitable for certain readers. your money or your life by Vicki Robin and Joseph R. Dominguez is one of my favorite books on finance, but a recent med grad might understand better The investor in a white coat by Dr. James Dahle. Alternatively, if your graduate is more interested in the behavioral side of finance, dollars and common sense by Jeff Kreisler and Dan Ariely is a great read.

3. Call in the experts

For something as personal as personal finances, it’s often a good idea to meet with a professional who can customize a plan to suit your graduate’s situation. A financial advisor can provide a wealth of knowledge, from budgeting and investing to optimizing new employee benefits. For a graduate entering the workforce for the first time, a roadmap to financial success can be an invaluable tool in times of change.

Alternatively, many advisors cater specifically to new graduates by offering products such as a graduate financial advice pack. Expect to pay upwards of $200 per hour for these services, which can be pre-packaged or billed by the hour. Entering the working world is an incredible opportunity to learn and hone financial skills, and the advice of a financial planner can guide you.

RIO RANCHO, NM (KRQE) – A local learning center is working to raise $10,600 for critically ill children by April 30. The recently opened learning experience in Rio Rancho has partnered with Make-A-Wish for a month-long campaign.

Center director Monica Nieto said Lets Grant Wishes allows students at the center to learn about philanthropy. “We have an ongoing philanthropy program. This program equips children with skills through activities and lessons that teach them about kindness, sharing and helping others,” Nieto said.

Students do hands-on activities that coincide with their weekly themes such as caring and friendships. “Our motto here is ‘It doesn’t matter how big or small you are, it’s the size of your heart that matters,'” Nieto said.

Instructor Alyssa Trujillo said she believes teaching these concepts at a young age will help students throughout their lives. “It helps them through life as they get older, and it’s easier to teach them when they’re younger because they grow up and remember what they’ve learned,” Trujillo said.

Nieto said they hit $2,600 in their goal. “It looks like it’s a long way off, but with the effort we’re making and the way we’re exposing ourselves to the community, I’m very confident that we’ll reach at least half of our goal by April 30. But I think the bigger picture is that we’re teaching our kids the concept of helping others and giving to others,” Nieto said. impact this has on our community and our children, and of course the children we can grant our wishes to.”

Classes also participate in coin wars, where students bring in spare change to include in their class money pot. The class that accumulates the most money will win a pizza night with the learning center mascot, Bubbles the elephant.

“I’m proud to be part of it because even working with kids who don’t have serious illnesses, thinking that they have to go through that breaks my heart as an educator,” Trujillo said.

Community members who wish to support the Learning Center’s April goal can donate online.

You save and save and you’ve probably been doing it for years. But be sure to budget for the fun and smell the roses along the way.

TEMPLE, Texas — You must love financial planner Rolandus Johnson’s attitude toward his clients by insisting that fun is built into your budget, all with the goal of living the life you want!

Johnson told 6 News: “Exactly, our goals are to find effective ways to do that, so the most important thing is to get the dollar to do more than one thing. So if we can be efficient in our savings and efficient in our planning, it leaves you with more time and opportunity to do fun things in your 20s, 30s and even 40s these days. But, you still put money aside for have this great life later.”

Johnson wants to remind everyone that much of what you spend now can be your entertainment.

“Game night, family game night at home, it’s huge in our household,” Johnson said. “Whether it’s Monopoly or things like that. Movie night at home with all the streaming services we have. Between HBO Max, HULU, Netflix, Prime Video all those things and movie night at home.”

And a lot of people say what’s the point if you save your whole life, and then you don’t take full advantage of that retreat.

“The financial peace of mind of doing things the right way, and along the way it usually works out, so you’re 58 or 60 and you have loved ones around you and financial peace isn’t a concern, you’re more concerned about taking care of them and they can focus on taking care of you, whatever your scenario is,” Johnson said.

So treat yourself and your loved ones a little, but understand why you are making these sacrifices. “Okay, okay, live like nobody else today, so you can live like nobody else tomorrow,” Johnson said. “It’s huge in my clientele.”

Of course, with inflation hitting as hard as it is, you really need to budget to spend your money on entertainment, otherwise it’s easy to have too many months left, at the end of your money…

Time is running out to claim last year’s economic impact payment worth up to $1,400 per person.

The money was part of the US rescue package approved in March 2021 and was the third in a series of stimulus payments during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most eligible people have received their money, but those who haven’t — or those who qualify for additional funds — have until today (April 18) to file their federal taxes.

Tax deadline is today (April 18): How to apply for a 6-month extension

Who is eligible?

People whose adjusted gross income, or AGI, was $75,000 or less for single filers or $160,000 or less for joint filers, were eligible for the $1,400 payments. According to CNBC, you can confirm the amount of the third payment and whether it was sent to you by logging into your IRS online account or the Get My Payment app. You can also view the Notice 1444-C letter sent to you by the IRS detailing how much you were paid and what you were eligible for.

Another important note: Parents of a child born in 2021 – or parents or guardians who added a new eligible child, such as through adoption – did not receive an Economic Impact Payment for that child. They can now be eligible to receive up to $1,400 per child by claiming the recovery rebate credit. You can see more here.

How to claim your money

Those eligible for more money should complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit Worksheet and submit it as part of your 2021 tax return. Once you have used this worksheet to calculate the amount owed to you, you can claim it on line 30 of Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR of your 2021 tax return.

WIESBADEN, GERMANY – Customer service is a top priority at the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Housing Office. To help incoming service members be better informed in advance of attractive housing options, a new program has been introduced. The “Plane to Pillow” program was born to help preserve the Army’s resilience capabilities, especially in the context of the endemic COVID pandemic in 2020. The program has also saved the garrison 1.4 million in 2020 and $1.8 million in 2021, a welcome side effect.

As the COVID pandemic really took off in the spring of 2020, local quarantine regulations in Germany also got stricter. For incoming soldiers and their families, this meant two weeks of quarantine in accommodation in Wiesbaden immediately after arrival. As a result, the Wiesbaden Army Lodge became very busy, very quickly.

“Too crowded to achieve the desired quarantine effect – while providing guests with all the comforts they deserve,” said Donald Meyer, housing manager at the garrison public works branch, of how he came up with the idea for his new program.

“It took us about 30 days on average at that time for families to move into their homes – today it’s three at most,” says Meyer.

A lot had to happen for this massive change. After a complete overhaul of the accommodation organization itself, there are now three ways to quickly access the accommodation of your choice.

As a first option, incoming service members can contact the accommodation directly by email. Housing staff will respond directly and send an information package to the service member. Once they provide us with the necessary information, such as PCS orders, completed housing application, and flight dates, housing will contact the service member’s new unit. The unit will assign a sponsor, who will act as the direct point of contact for the incoming service member and their family. The sponsor in turn works with the housing office to review available housing units that meet the needs of the service member and their family.

The sponsor then shows these housing units via online video chat via Facetime or other platforms, directly to the service member. These help the service member view accommodations and make a selection, while still in the United States.

“The sponsors have done a great job showing the homes, acting like a real estate agent, while providing vital information and showing the amenities of the homes and the surrounding community,” Meyer summarizes from his daily work.

The second path to housing is that there is already an existing contact with the new unit and sponsor. In this case, the sponsor contacts us with the housing needs of the family he is sponsoring. If the appropriate documents are already available, we hand over our housing proposals to the sponsor and the process takes place as quickly as described above.

The third option is when we receive a “win list”. With this list, housing can accurately determine who, where, and when PCS movers are arriving, allowing housing to prepare well in advance to meet incoming needs.

“As we know, our residents are really satisfied with this service. When everything is working properly, the service member will have their new mailing address, new residential address, TV and Internet on, and an ACS welcome box already at home. So we created a win-win situation for all parties by taking care of families and saving the military money,” Meyer said.

With over 15 years of experience as the Army Housing Chief in various locations, Meyer has worked tirelessly to ensure garrison housing continues to evolve. Whether it’s organizational structure pivots, due to a global pandemic, or capitalizing on the availability of updated video technology – Meyer’s “Plane to Pillow” program has improved the way incoming staff acquires enough accommodation upon arrival here in Wiesbaden.

For anyone interested in starting a digital advertising agency, Megan Clasen has award-winning advice. With a career in digital advertising spanning over a decade, Clasen has steadily crafted a clear roadmap for creating some of today’s most successful marketing campaigns. And as one of the few women in tech, and one of the even fewer in political tech, Clasen is helping shift the paradigm of what winning big actually looks like.

Most recently serving as a paid senior media adviser for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, Clasen has become an in-house “digital guru.” Leading their publicity work, Clasen’s team executed the largest digital ad program ever run by a Democratic campaign. Prior to that, she led JB Pritzker’s digital efforts in his successful Illinois gubernatorial bid, which Politico called “The best campaign money can buy” and was later recognized at the 2019 Reed Awards. as the “Best Online Advertising Campaign”.

After the 2020 election, Clasen and his creative partner, Patrick McHugh, came together to found Gambit Strategies – a first-of-its-kind digital advertising company specializing in “persuasion, mobilization and advocacy campaigns for candidates and candidates. causes,” as shared by McHugh via Twitter at launch. “What you’ve seen is a lot of TV companies saying, ‘We can do digital, too,’ or digital fundraising companies saying, ‘We can do digital persuasion and mobilization,'” said Clasen, quoted recently in The Hill. “Not many companies say we’re experts in digital engagement and persuasion.”

Since launching Gambit, Clasen and McHugh have exponentially increased their reach and intrinsic value as a digital media and creative company primarily focused on voting operations. In our recent interview, Clasen revealed that the company now has 14 employees who have been with the company for less than a year, with more than 60% of their pool of political candidate clients campaigning in this cycle identifying as women. .

Speaking about the success of their business, Clasen shared his amazement at the number of people who have trusted the team’s expertise. As the year progressed, she expressed enthusiasm for continuing to push for increased mobilization up and down the ballot. Outlining some high-profile strategies guaranteed to work across a range of industries, Clasen highlighted some crucial points for those hoping to reach a larger, more diverse audience in the years to come.

What kind of story are you trying to tell?

When crafting a marketing plan focused on digital engagement, Clasen detailed the critical role storytelling plays in driving audience buy-in. With the Biden campaign, Clasen thinks his team has been able to do wonders by staying true to the message. Going into the middle of a pandemic with a generally erratic opponent, she says focusing only on the stories that spoke most to President Biden and what his administration sought to deliver — like “The Biden Standard” — was what helped secure victory.

Sticking to a concrete storyline was something Clasen learned as he became one of today’s top digital strategists. Starting her career in digital advertising with agencies in New York, she spent five years working with brands including Samsung and AT&T, before taking on a starring role on the Hilary Clinton show. Hillary for America digital advertising team in 2015. Looking specifically for someone with an outside perspective and the potential to bring new ideas to politics, Clasen was hired to oversee ad operations and media buying, but s often found herself explaining to her colleagues why digital should be a priority.

As she taught them to view digital persuasion as a broadcast medium similar to television instead of the direct mail programs they were used to, progressive campaign leaders and brands quickly began to subscribe to Clasen’s dogma. And as one of the first political campaigns to sign a partnership with a digital streaming platform – Hulu – Hillary Clinton’s run for the White House has become Meghan Clasen’s pioneering effort in digital political marketing.

Who are you trying to sell?

Greater access to streaming services and inevitably shorter attention spans have transformed the focus of advertising marketing in the digital and physical world. The key point Clasen and McHugh are trying to make with the creation of Gambit Strategies is that without strategic digital advertising, persuading and mobilizing everything voters simply cannot be done.

“I think [it] is emotional,” Clasen explained of the habitual nature of voting that often leads to difficulties with voter turnout in non-presidential cycles. “People want to know that the person they are voting for shares their values,” she said. “Being able to tell stories, I think, makes people trust a candidate.”

Spearheading the creative marketing strategies that helped President Joe Biden win his seat in the White House in 2020, Clasen illustrated his experience using real people to share their reasons for voting for a candidate – critical narratives designed to create the emotional bonds needed to bring other voters together. “If somebody’s been a Republican all their life and you’re trying to get them to come out and vote for a Democrat, you’re really going to have to build that trust and get them to hear from people who look like them why vote. for this candidate is the right thing to do.

The Biden campaign had a digital advertising program budget of $250 million and a full understanding of the individuals on the other side of the communication. Some voters felt disillusioned, others had little or no access to reliable resources. To help reach a more diverse audience, Clasen used creative platform-specific formatting, such as culturally competent 15-second videos on Facebook instead of generic 30-second videos.

And to make sure voters genuinely feel like they’re being heard and speaking to them, Clasen pointed to specific targeting tracks being used, for veterans, rural citizens and the elderly in different battleground states. , etc. caring can be very powerful,” she concluded.

Use what is true to create novelty

Clasen agrees that having a mix of targeted ad placement and prioritizing the creative experience when analyzing data is what sets his agency apart as a top political tech. Throughout our conversation, she emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making and how leveraging customer insights to inform branding and marketing plans should be the way forward for anyone hoping to make waves. digital.

“Data drives our decisions about where we spend money online,” she began, referring to the invaluable insights gleaned from what and where people consume the most. line. “People spend more time on Facebook and Instagram than on most other platforms, but [they] will scroll on their mobile device, looking at something for three to five seconds on average.

According to Clasen, getting an emotional message across in today’s climate really depends on the environment. But by targeting the highest quality persuasive impression based on consumer insights, it becomes easier to reach, reach and move viewers at every level.

Keep a clear strategy

“If you told me 10 years ago this is where I was going to land – that I was going to be a vital part of the campaign that brought down Donald Trump and then start my own ad agency – honestly , I probably would’ve done ‘I don’t believe you,’ Clasen said of her professional journey, but she undeniably illustrates the importance of having a clear strategy when ascending one’s career.

Named one of the “Top Women in Digital Marketing” at the 2019 Digital Megaphone Awards, the Cleveland, Ohio native talked about following her instincts and working hard at every task presented to allow opportunities to uncover her passions. Clasen revealed it was through his experience working with people-centric companies like Starcom and GMMB, his leap of faith on an entry-level position in his dream career after college, and countless days of “networking like crazy” to keep the lights on in her new New York apartment — all before working in politics — really helped prepare her for the competitive sphere she now dominates.

“I think the important thing, especially for women, is that it’s okay to fail,” she said. “People are going to tell you no and you have to keep going. People will act like you’re not good enough because they’re intimidated by you. But it is important to have confidence in yourself and to keep working towards your goals in order to be able to achieve them.
