More than 10,000 jobs were created in the Northeast in 2021 as the region’s economy struggled to fight the pandemic.

Call centers, manufacturers and outsourcing companies have proven to be major employers over the past 12 months, helping the North East create at least 11,829 jobs advertised by the companies on our pages.

And despite the challenges of Covid-19 restrictions, national lockdowns, labor shortages and supply chain constraints, companies operating in all sectors have announced new appointments or recruitment drives. in 2021.

Our jobs figure is probably underestimated and does not include supply chain spillovers, while in other cases companies have announced new jobs but have not disclosed how many ‘between them had to be created.

These programs include Nissan and Envision AESC’s mission to create jobs at Hiatchi Rail in Newton Aycliffe, Britishvolt’s plans for a gigafactory in Blyth and the new call center in Sunderland after being chosen to supply rolling stock for the HS2 program.

The year started off slowly, but jobs were created even during a lockdown for e-commerce and digital service companies, as well as PPE manufacturers like PFF.

Uncertainty about the future led to a drop in recruitment during the spring months, but when the economy began to reopen in April, activity picked up and the summer months were a boon for employment in the Northeast.

In June, Durham-based workwear maker Workwear Express announced 100 new jobs, followed by games studio Teesside Double Eleven – winner of the North East Company of the Year – which also created 100 jobs.

In July, no less than 2,122 jobs were announced, led by two announcements at Nissan – 400 on its production line and another 909 as part of its gigafactory plan. Electric battery maker Envision AESC also announced 750 new jobs at the plant, which has now obtained a building permit.

August turned out to be the most dynamic month of the year for recruiters with 2,485 jobs created by Quotient Sciences, Norton Rose Fulbright, Northern Gas & Power, Vertu and Engenera.

Just Eat announced the launch of a new call center in Sunderland, which would include 1,500 new employees, and there was also good news that a new tech company had chosen Newcastle to house a new base, resulting in the creation of 100 new jobs.

September announced the opening of a £ 130million cable factory that would create more than 170 jobs in the North East. JDR Cables will build the cable plant in Cambois, Blyth, which will also support jobs at its existing facility in Hartlepool – and plans for the company were recently presented to the community.

In October, 1,500 additional roles were added to the total. Call centers and outsourcing have paved the way for job creation, with Newcastle-based Echo-U announcing its intention to create 400 new jobs and Sunderland’s EC Outsourcing seeking to hire 350 when it expands. will develop in a new base on the basis of a number of new contracts.

Elsewhere, the tech sector has seen 300 new jobs created by Gateshead’s Bloom Procurement, while global digital consulting firm Monstarlab is creating 100 new tech jobs after choosing Newcastle as its second UK base and the company of European alarm Verisure has announced the last 100 jobs for its operations in North Tyneside.

The last two months of the year saw an expansion at Protector Group, Sock Monkey and Saggezza. Notably, transport company Lumo has set up its headquarters in Newcastle, creating 100 jobs, and Accenture has also announced plans to create 1,500 new positions in its northern offices.

Looking to the future, Heather Mills has announced plans to create more than 300 jobs in the North East through a multi-million pound partnership with a German food giant. Pfeifer & Langen Industrie und Handels KG has taken a 25.1% minority stake in its plant-based food business VBites, and the money will be used to reopen and accelerate production of VBites products at the Peterlee site of the business.

The same week, Smulders announced that it was looking to create 250 jobs at its Wallsend yard through increased activity in offshore wind. The North Tyneside company is part of a consortium selected by Moray West, a wind farm marking the second phase of a historic renewable energy project outside of Moray Firth.

The project will clash with other companies to bid for a share of a prize pool worth £ 265million a year in government support for renewable energy production – and the round of auctions on the green energy has opened up over the past two weeks, giving hope for even more projects off the northeast coast.

Most of the brands in this area were international, with the clothes not specifically designed for Indian women. Spying on an opportunity, she created FableStreet, a national clothing brand aimed specifically at Indian professional women, in 2016. Gudwani says that while she has a personal interest in these products, she was clear that her business would not be a game of passion but rather would be built on a solid business model. She says her business’s revenue has increased eightfold in the past two years, all the more impressive given that it happened during the pandemic. “Short on tailoring, I can do anything and know everything about the clothing industry,” she says. She has so far successfully completed two rounds of funding, raising approximately $ 500,000 (Rs 3.8 crore) in seed funding and nearly $ 3 million (Rs 22 crore) from Fireside Ventures. She says her goal is to have a store in every Indian metro once the pandemic has subsided.
