Nature’s Footwear, located on Queen Street East near Waverley Road in the beach, is in the process of closing permanently.
“The only thing I would like to say is how much we appreciate the wonderful people in the neighborhood and they have supported us over the years. I don’t know what else to say about it. I really hate going there. I love the neighborhood, I love the people,” said owner and operator Kyle Burden.
Explaining the situation, Burden said, “The supply chain has come to a halt and we can’t afford to stay here any longer.”
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economic and supply systems, Burden can no longer access the shoes he used to sell in his shop.
“I’m a shoe store and haven’t been able to buy any of my major brands.”
Nature’s Footwear sells comfortable shoes. This has included orthopedic footwear such as Birkenstocks as well as other footwear, such as genuine moccasins.
The store was originally opened in 1978 by Kyle Burden’s mother-in-law, Lois Coston, and her friend Wilhelmina.
Since then, the business has been a family affair. “My wife worked here. My two kids have worked here, friends, family, over the years,” Burden said.
In 2004, Lois Coston passed away. His daughter Janice Burden and son-in-law Kyle Burden carried on the family tradition by keeping the store open.
Then in 2018, it was the 40and Nature’s Footwear anniversary. It was a time when people were talking about cake and partying.
In 2018, the family members highlighted that they had a loyal customer base in the area and were motivated to continue providing excellent service to those in need.
Two years later, the pandemic arrived.
Now, in 2022, after 44 years in business, Nature’s Footwear can look back on its legacy of providing quality footwear to the beach community and curious tourists.
On what comes next in life, Burden explained that he wasn’t ready for retirement and had to find something.
Nature’s Footwear combines inventory with a solid knowledge of footwear. Burden once explained that he saw many problems people had with their feet and that he could generally help those clients heal.
He can provide shoes that help people with back problems, hip problems and of course foot problems. Local doctors, chiropractors and athletic therapists refer clients to Nature’s Footwear.
The shop doesn’t just work to heal people’s pain. It also prevents these problems from starting in the first place.
Burden explained that three years old is an appropriate age for a young person to start wearing comfort shoes.
Some families bring their children to Nature’s Footwear to purchase footwear that will protect children’s feet over time.
Not only does Burden sell orthopedic shoes, but he himself has experienced how they can cure tension.
He had pain in his hip as well as his back and tried to wear a pair of runners on a trip to Las Vegas, which hurt him. Then he put on a pair of Birkenstocks and there was an immediate improvement.
Over the years many stores have come and gone in the area. But Nature’s Footwear stuck around for over 40 years. Burden said this was due to the store’s efficient and respectful service.
“I would love nothing more than to stay here,” Burden said.
