Tom McKibbin delighted as he continues his recent impressive form with a strong start at the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa

Holywood teenager Tom McKibbin admits he is enjoying every moment he is on the course at the moment after continuing his fine form in South Africa.

A week after notching his best Challenge Tour result at the Bain’s Whiskey Cape Town Open by finishing third, the 19-year-old opened the Jonsson Workwear Open in Durban with a five under 65 to tie up eighth place.

McKibbin fired six birdies and a bogey at Mount Edgecombe Country Club, but it was already four shots from leader JC Ritchie – who won in Cape Town at the expense of McKibbin last week – who celebrated his birthday in style with a nine under 61-year-old at the same time course that included a hole-in-one on his second hole.

But McKibbin is delighted with his recent form, saying: “It was a good day, just solid scoring again, continued the good golf of last week. It was just a good day around the course, there wasn’t much wind so I just took advantage of the conditions.

“I drove the ball well, hit good irons, had a few putts. When you shoot those low bullets, there’s always a bit of luck involved, but it was all solid.

“It was really nice. I think the courses suit me quite well, they are very similar to the American courses but with a little more wind. I really enjoy it, it’s a great place and I can’t wait to play more.

Cormac Sharvin of Ardglass retired after 12 holes of his first round when he finished.

McKibbin plays today’s second round at Durban Country Club, where the final two rounds will also be played.
